Combined with #14 this would make for a proper rich media experience

Of course this would have privacy/security implications, so it should be opt in. For example, a grey thumbnail with a Download button should be shown, which then shows a clear prompt that this will connect to e.g. Imgur. This prompt will also allow the user to whitelist a domain.
